ROUNDUP: Two games, 27 runs for English softball
press-releases

Just a day after Wednesday’s 9-1 win against Chelsea, the Lynn English softball team took things up a notch – or, a few notches – besting Lynn Tech, 18-3, Thursday morning.

The Bulldogs outhit the Tigers, 10-2. A bright side for Tech, however, was that the team committed just one error compared to English’s three.

For the second consecutive game, English’s Kate Johansson (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 runs) put on a show in the circle. She went five innings in this one, striking out five and allowing just two hits.

With the bats, Teanna Nguon had a pair of hits with three RBI, while LeaNyah Pineiro went home with another two RBI alongside four walks. Ariana Reynoso (3 RBI) and Annika Johansson (2 hits, 2 runs) played well, too, but that wasn’t all.

“Gracie Mulloy played lights out at first, making multiple diving plays,” said English coach Ashley Aldred.

For Tech, freshman Genevieve McCafferty (2 runs) pitched well and had four strikeouts. Camilla Rufino Santos “worked hard behind the plate on defense,” according to Tech coach Beth Mercaldi, and went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

“They (Bulldogs) came on really strong in the third with nine (runs),” Mercaldi said. “But our girls gave it a good effort… Big shoutout to freshman JB Beauchamp, rookie second baseman who turned a double play to get the Tigers out of the second inning by catching a fly ball and throwing to first to pick the runner off. She made a repeat performance in the top of the fifth inning.”

The Bulldogs host Malden at 4 p.m. on Monday, while Tech welcomes Christo Rey at 4 p.m. the following day.

SOFTBALL

Lynnfield 14
Boston Latin 0

This one took just five innings, as Lynnfield hit its way to a 14-0 victory against Boston Latin in enemy territory. Versatility was on display, too, with multiple Pioneers having big days at the plate.

Sophia Brown (5 IP, 2 hits, walk, strikeout) earned the win, while explosive Kayla George went 4-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI. Other contributors included Morgan Hubbard (3-for-4, 4 RBI), Olivia Kelter (2 hits, 2 runs), and Ava Gamache (2 hits, 2 runs).

Now, a quick turnaround as Lynnfield visits Lowell Catholic at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Marblehead 11
Boston Latin 1

Marblehead ace Tessa Francis (7 IP) tossed a no-hitter to go with 11 punchouts, and her Magicians took care of Boston Latin, 11-1.

Offensively, shortstop Hailey Schmitt (4-for-5, run, RBI) led the way, while Isabel Mortensen (2-for-4) and Ruby Calienes (2 RBI) contributed to keep Marblehead, 4-0, undefeated.

BASEBALL

Lynn Tech 13
Notre Dame 2

Lynn Tech baseball coach Eddie Lewis said, “We didn’t waste any time from the start today” in his team’s dominant road win.

“From the first inning, we let the bats go and struck first, scoring five runs,” he added. “It really felt like everything was clicking for us from the jump.”

Chris Boyd (7 strikeouts) and Will McCafferty (6) executed pitching duties. With the bats, Tech was led by Boyd (3-for-5), Mario Giordano (4-for-5, 2 RBI), McCafferty (3-for-4, RBI), and Nevin Gonzalez (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI).

“This is a very special group of guys that I have the privilege of coaching this season, and it’s a pleasure to watch them go to work every week,” Lewis said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. Now 4-1, we’re just looking to keep playing hard and build on that momentum one game at a time.”

BOYS LACROSSE

Lynn 7
Revere 5

The Lynn Jets took care of the Patriots on enemy turf, sporting a 7-5 win behind Ian Brown’s goal and two assists, as well as Jordan Em’s two goals and a helper.

Alex Waterman netted two, while Owen Toomey and Trey Rossetti scored one apiece for the Jets, who head to Mystic Valley at 10 a.m. on Friday.

St. John’s Prep 15
Andover 10

Five games, five wins for the defending Division 1 state champions. The Prep took care of Andover, 15-10, at home.

Andover bolted to a quick 2-0 lead – a rarity for Prep – but the Eagles knotted up the scoreboard, 3-3, by the end of the first quarter. Jake Vana (3 assists) went home with a hat trick and Jack Doherty won 16 of 19 face-offs to lead the hosts, who next welcome St. John’s at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Beverly 12
Swampscott 5

Swampscott (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season Thursday, having little answer against Beverly’s explosive attack. Avery Laundry led the Big Blue with two goals and an assist, while Lilah Caplan registered 10 saves.

Sophia Ciciotti (goal), Cecilia Tripp (goal), Victoria Pierro (goal), and Coco Clopton (2 assists) stepped up for Swampscott, which visits Essex Tech on Tuesday.
