Aiming for a .500 record, the Lynn Classical baseball team (3-3) did just that with a narrow 1-0 win against Medford at Fraser Field.

Alfred Ventura went the distance on the bump for his first win of the season, allowing just four hits and punching out eight. He also went 1-for-3 at the plate. 

“Ventura did a great job in only his second varsity start,” said first-year Classical coach Leon Elwell. 

Christian Figueroa led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with the game’s only RBI. Jake Desmond (1-for-3) secured his first varsity hit, while “freshman shortstop Markie Walsh continued his strong play defensively,” as said by Elwell.

The Rams host Chelsea on Monday in search of their fourth win. 

BASEBALL

Masconomet 4

Swampscott 1

Swampscott didn’t have a base hit after the second inning, costing the team in its 4-1 defeat at the hands of Masconomet. The Big Blue saw their record dip to 3-3.

Jack Spear (6 IP, 3 earned runs, 4 hits, 3 BB) was on the mound, while Connor Chiarello (stolen base, BB) scored Swampscott’s lone run. He hit a double in the first inning and was singled in by Chase Groothuis.

Other Swampscott (3-2 in Northeastern Conference) hits came from the bats of Jason Bouffard and Michael Collins. The Big Blue head to Fraser Field on Saturday against Lynn English with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.

Marblehead 14

Salem 1

With Friday’s game moved to a 10 a.m. start, the Magicians showed they can be morning people when needed. Marblehead bested Salem, 14-1, at Seaside Park.

After giving up an unearned run in the first, Marblehead scored the next 14, eight of which came in the second inning. Junior Stef Shepard led off with a solo home run, then hit a three-run shot later in the inning.

Shepard and company visit Bishop Fenwick Monday afternoon.

SOFTBALL

Gloucester 6

Saugus 1

A 6-1 loss for Saugus, but coach Steve Almquist said – for a portion of the game – it was one of the Sachems’ (2-3) better games.

“It was a very good game… it was much better than I thought,” said Almquist, whose side trailed just 2-0 for the majority. “In the bottom of the sixth, they scored four runs to break it open.”

Captain Lily Ventre (2-for-3, single, double) led the offensive charge, followed by Devany Millerick (1-for-3), Felicia Alexander (1-for-1), and Taylor Deleidi (1-for-3, run), who “pitched a fantastic game,” according to Almquist, with six strikeouts and a lone walk.

Saugus scored its run on a sacrifice-fly from captain Ava Rogers.

Lowell 5

Lynn Classical 2

The Lady Rams ran into a hungry Lowell team – one with just two wins heading in – dropping Classical’s record to 3-2.

Classical’s Nevaeh Eth was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Brooke Braswell was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rachel Dana (RBI single) got the job done in the circle, allowing just four hits and striking out four across six innings.

Classical, which sports a 3-1 record in the Greater Boston League behind coach Joe Morin, travels to face Chelsea on Monday.

Lowell Catholic 7

Lynnfied 5

The Lynnfield bats were hot, but Lowell Catholic’s were a tad hotter in its 7-5 win over the Pioneers (2-3). 

In a frustrating sixth inning for Lynnfield, its defense committed six errors, leading to six Lowell Catholic runs. For the Pioneers, Morgan Hubbard had two singles and a double, while Lily Williams went home with two hits. 

Whittier Tech 1

Marblehead 0

Whittier Tech scored a run in the first inning, and that was enough in its 1-0 shutout against Marblehead (4-1, 2-0 in Northeastern Conference).

Pitcher Tessa Francis of the Magicians gave up just four hits and punched out 12, but Marblehead batters combined for just two hits in the pitchers’ duel.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lynn 9

Mystic Valley 3

Some teams come with just one strong player, but that’s not Lynn, which tripled up Mystic Valley thanks to a more-than-versatile display.

Ian Brown (assist) ripped a hat trick, while Trey Rossetti (assist) netted a pair. Owen Toomey, Jake Parker, Alex Waterman, and Maegan Baker all scored, while Jordan Em dished out a helper.

The Jets upped their record to 4-5 before Tuesday’s road tilt against Salem.

VOLLEYBALL

The Rams charged their way to a 6-1 record on Friday, sweeping Medford on  home hardwood in set scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-10. Jeremiah Vargas (3 kills, assist, ace), Jonathan Ly (10 kills, 2 aces), and Viet Tran (10 kills, 3 aces) were the leading men for Classical.

St. John’s Prep 3

Central Catholic 0

The Prep showed off its versatile attack, topping Central Catholic with ease in set scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-12. The Eagles were led by Tighe Lusk and Michael Wagner with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Cole Morrison added 25 assists, and Prep went home with 34 digs.

BOYS TENNIS

It was a perfect Friday for Swampscott’s boys tennis team, which took care of Beverly on home court. Charles Schepens, Sam Schepens, and Victor Zeissig picked up singles wins, while the duos of Trevor Talibian-Julian Flake and Rae Godangoni-Harrison Finamore were victorious.
