Lynnfield Street will be weeks in the works

LYNN — If anyone has driven down Lynnfield Street recently, you’ve probably noticed some construction taking place. If you haven’t, I’m not sure if driving is the best idea for you.

So, what’s happening on Lynnfield Street?

Drivers are warned of uneven pavement surface as they drive along Lynnfield Street.

Amelia Aubourg, Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT) Chief Communications Officer, spoke on behalf of Ralph Romano, District Operations Engineer, and the department saying that MassDOT is currently implementing a $6.5 million project to rehabilitate the 0.75 mile segment of Lynnfield Street from Great Woods Road to Wyoma Square in Lynn.

Aubourg said the project is a federally funded project through the Boston Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Transportation Improvement Program. The funding was allocated under the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program and the Surface Transportation Block Grant program, with the funding split 80% federal and 20% state.

“Currently, the contractor is excavating the old asphalt pavement structure and is grading the sub base in preparation for the installation of two of the three new paving courses,” Aubourg wrote in an email to the Item. “The work is being completed in sequential segments along the corridor.”

The contractor for this project is Newport Construction Inc.

Aubourg said later this week is when people can expect paving work to install the first two pavement courses. After that, the contractor will install new curbs and sidewalks in the area, and paving will move to the next segment of the road.

This pattern will continue for the next four weeks.

Cars drive along the unpaved Lynnfield Street during the midday construction.

“The installation of the first two pavement courses is expected to be completed throughout the project limits prior to Memorial Day,” Aubourg wrote.

She said the new surface will be a polymer superpave asphalt mix, and will feature on-pavement bike lanes going in both directions.

“The existing pavement structure was significantly deteriorated and warranted replacement.  In addition, this heavily traveled road was in need of a new drainage system and upgrades to the sidewalks,” Aubourg wrote. “The design provides for significant improvements in bicycle accommodation through the reallocation of portions of the paved surface to provide marked bike lanes throughout the project. The reconstructed roadway is expected to improve safety for all users.”

Major operations for this project have been ongoing since Spring 2023, and the contract completion date is scheduled for June 23, 2025.

Aubourg said most of the work will be completed during the day, with some operations occurring at night.

“The contractor will be working both the day and night shifts for the next few weeks until the first two of (the) three courses of pavement are complete. The final course of pavement will be placed either this Fall or next Spring,” Aubourg wrote.
